Many people
think sushi is raw fish. But this is not true. Sushi indicates
foods that use rice seasoned with vinegar. So anything (vegetables,
cooked seafood, etc.) made with this rice can be called sushi!
It is said the origin of sushi was
(salted fish meat packed in rice, then fermented) in China at
the end of the 2nd century A.D. Then this method of preserving
fish was introduced into Japan about the 7th century A.D. At that
time only the fish meat was eaten with the rice being discarded.
As time went by methods of fermentation were developed and eating
habits were changed. In the early 19th century, a man called Yohei
Hanaya started serving raw fish on sushi rice in Tokyo. It is
said this is the beginning of the current style of nigiri-zushi.
Sushi has some different styles. You
can enjoy not only their taste but also the presentations.
*Nigiri-zushi: Hand-pressed
mounds of sushi rice with ingredients on top.
*Maki-zushi: Sushi rice and
ingredients rolled with seaweed, and cut in pieces.
*Temaki-zushi: Seaweed rolled
like an ice cream waffle cone shape, stuffed with sushi rice and
ingredients.
At last, sushi is healthy food. It
is low in fat, and very nutritious. The fish in sushi provides
protein and can be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Seaweed
is rich in iodine. Vegetables have vitamins and the rice provides
complex carbohydrates.
